FROM KYIV TO KANSAS: SOFIA'S

AMERICAN DREAM

IMG_9642.jpeg

When I first stepped off the plane in Kansas, a wave of emotions washed over me – excitement, a little bit of nervousness, and a huge sense of anticipation. Leaving my home in Kyiv, Ukraine, to spend a year as an exchange student in the USA was a dream come true, and now, here I was! My name is Sofia, and I’m 18 years old, and this past year in an American high school has been nothing short of transformative.

Before coming here, I had so many ideas about what American high school would be like, mostly from movies and TV shows. And while some things were surprisingly accurate (yes, there are lockers!), a lot of it was so much more vibrant and welcoming than I ever imagined.

One of the biggest differences I noticed immediately was the sheer variety of classes and extracurriculars. In Ukraine, our curriculum is more standardized, but here, I could choose from so many different subjects! I took an art class where I learned pottery, something I’d always wanted to try. I also joined the debate club, which pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me improve my English speaking skills tremendously. It was incredible to explore new interests and discover hidden talents I never knew I had.

But beyond the academics, it was the people and the culture that truly made my experience unforgettable. My host family, the Millers, welcomed me with open arms and treated me like their own daughter. We had family dinners every night, celebrated holidays together, and they even taught me how to bake apple pie – a truly American tradition! They patiently answered all my questions about American life and shared so much of their culture with me.

At school, I quickly made friends. American students are incredibly open and curious, and they loved hearing about Ukraine. We shared stories about our lives, our traditions, and even our favorite music. I was a bit shy at first, but everyone was so kind and inclusive, inviting me to football games, school dances, and weekend hangouts. It felt amazing to be part of a community so quickly.

Of course, there were challenges. Adjusting to a new language, new customs, and even new food sometimes felt overwhelming. But every challenge was an opportunity to learn and grow. I learned to be more independent, more adaptable, and more confident in myself. My English improved by leaps and bounds, and I even started thinking in English sometimes!

Looking back, my year in the USA has been an incredible journey. I’ve not only gained a deeper understanding of American culture but also a greater appreciation for my own Ukrainian heritage. I’ve made lifelong friends, experienced so many new things, and grown into a more globally-minded person.

As I prepare to return to Ukraine, I carry with me a heart full of gratitude and countless wonderful memories. This exchange program didn't just give me an education; it gave me a second home and a new perspective on the world. To anyone considering a cultural exchange, I say, go for it! It's an experience that will enrich your life in ways you can't even imagine.
